Throughout the course of this semester I have learned numerous valuable lessons such as words can really change the way your students perceive things. Choosing your choice of words is very important according to what we have learned. Since everyone is different and that students look up to a teacher, it is very easy for you as the educator to give your students the wrong ideas. We want to be able to educate students the right way so that they can grow up with a positive attitude and perhaps teach others in that manner. We should not be using words such as what’s “good” and “bad” because something “good” might be someone else’s “bad” due to the fact that, again, everyone is different.
In the beginning of the course I found it very odd that we were singing “kiddie-songs” but as Cathy started to get into more depth with it and had the whole class to participate, I started to realize what she was doing. These little activities really got us thinking as individuals and future educators on how we could teach and how it would be beneficial for everyone in the classroom. How she started singing in the middle of class startles me all the time but then she explains herself that the best way to get a class engage is to start singing. Well, not just anything but what we are planning to teach that day. How, instead of telling the class what they’re suppose to do, she just sings the song a few times to get our attention and that give us time to take in what she’s doing and then ask she continues to ask the class to repeat. She describes that this is the easiest method to really get the class to engage without giving out instructions, giving students a bit more freedom because then, they will not be bind by rules. The activities where we can form our own groups and use our imaginations and creativity to complete it, allowing us to express our own individuality with no restriction which schools nowadays put on students.
The articles that Cathy had us reading also played a very important role to music education as well. In a sense we were also getting educated throughout these articles and our responses that we had to write after reading gave us a better understanding to what we had just learn. And because we had to think about it what we have to write, we take-in more of the article and get a better understanding that also helps with what we learn in class and how it can teach us as future educators.
I was able to understand through this course that teaching is much more complex than it seems. It’s not just passing on knowledge and giving lectures all day but how you engage and the way you perceive on the way you teach. It takes a lot of thinking and understanding before we actually start doing what we want. The process of being able to communicate the right way also plays a very crucial role as explained before.
Overall, this course has been a very fun and exciting one. Where we are all able to engage and social with other people as we all participate in different activities that allowed us to get to know our classmates better and how they thought and perceived on the situation. We were able to learn together and have fun at the same time! Working with new people was also a very beneficial thing. As individuals we were able to learn from other people’s perspectives which could possibly give us new ideas to expand from the general one. I learned a lot throughout the semester but it was music education that really got me engage and had me thinking. I learned more in this course than the whole semester combined with other courses. It was the one I looked forward to everyday! I really love how Cathy went into depth with everything she talked about and made sure everyone understood what she was getting by. And how she made everyone feel inclusive so no one would be left out from the fun.
Thank you Prof. Cathy Benedict! I’ve honestly learned a lot from your classes and hope that everyone else felt the same way! Have a wonderful and safe Christmas Break!
